Trade completed between the Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings involving a Hall of Famer today in history
46 years ago today, the Los Angeles Kings and the Detroit Red Wings completed a trade involving a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Not all trades end up going well for both teams. Here, it's safe to say that it didn't go too well for Detroit, with the Kings on the better side of a deal that went down on this day in 1979.
The Red Wings sent a player and two draft picks to get a forward from the Kings.
Here are all the details.
Red Wings Send Two Draft Picks And A Player To LA For Dale McCourt
While Dale McCourt had a great career in the NHL and played some good hockey for the Red Wings, scoring 135 goals over his five seasons in Detroit, the picks sent to LA were used to draft a player that would've changed the Wings' franchise:
Larry Murphy.Indeed, Detroit sent their 1980 and 1981 first-round picks, which the Kings used to draft Murphy and Doug Smith.
Murphy went on to win four Stanley Cups in his career. The HHoF member played in 1,615 games in the NHL for the Kings, Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and then Detroit.
Although he did win two Stanley Cups with the Wings in 1997 and 1998, how many more could he have won if he had spent his entire career in Detroit?
The defenseman from Ontario tallied 152 points in 215 playoff games over his career spanning 20 years.
As for McCourt, he remained in Detroit for three more seasons, where he would get two 30-goal seasons before being traded to the Buffalo Sabres in 1981.
