Tragedy: The Detroit Red Wings announce the death of a former fan favorite broadcaster
The Detroit Red Wings organization reacted to the tragic passing of former broadcaster and Hall of Famer Ray Lane at 95 years old.
Ray Lane, a legendary figure in Michigan sports who he worked nearly four decades in broadcasting, calling Tigers, Lions, Pistons, and Red Wings games,
passed away Saturday at 95 years old.Generations of fans heard his voice in the highs and lows of their favorite team, making him a respected figure in all sports.
His time covering the Red Wings gave fans some of the most memorable calls in franchise history.
Red Wings Make Heartfelt Statement On Ray Lane's Passing
Lane covering the Wings for many years at Joe Louis Arena, including when Detroit ended its 42-year Stanley Cup drought in 1997.
The organization wanted to pay tribute to him by sharing a heartfelt statement on social media.
"The Detroit Red Wings mourn the passing of former broadcaster Ray Lane, on-air host for Red Wings broadcasts for 16 seasons. Ray was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
We share our condolences with his family, friends, and loved ones."

In 2007, Lane reflected on the root of his passion in an interview:
"My mother always said I had the loudest mouth in the neighborhood. I wasn't sure I wanted to be a sports announcer, but I wanted to be a radio announcer."
