Now that Alex Ovechkin is one goal away from beating Wayne Gretzky's All-Time Goals Scored record, Gretzky, like his predecessor before him, who followed him along his path to defeating Gordie Howe's record.

Also like his predecessor before him, Gordie Howe, who would trail Gretzky on his path to defeating his all-time goals scored record with 894.
Gretzky's 894th goal, breaking Howe's record, would come during the 1999 season, where he'd score against Jets goalie Wayne Flaherty.
Now, with 894 under his belt, Wayne has to wait one more game before he can truly congratulate Ovechkin, who is on the cusp of overtaking him in the record books.
And today The Great One would make a statement about the kind of class it requires to follow someone like Jean Beliveau and Red Wings Legend Gordie Howe before him.
The last goalie Wayne Gretzky scored against, the one who surrendered his 894th and final NHL goal on March 29, 1999, Flaherty has been watching with keen interest while Alex Ovechkin closes in on that magical number, which remains the League record for at least a little while longer.
Gretzky is doing this not only for the integrity of the game, but his emotional statement behind the game is a testament to the love he's found playing in, and relationships built along the way.
Ovechkin hopefully will be able to say the same, as the relationship he's cultivated with Gretzky along the way is lifelong we hope.
Alex Ovechkin scored two goals against the Blackhawks last night for numbers 893 and 894.
When the torch is passed from Wayne Gretzky to Alex Ovechkin, we feel that the integrity of the process has been protected, and Gordie Howe would be pleased.
