It appears that Steve Yzerman has made his decision on the fate of Detroit Red Wings prospect Sebastian Cossa, as he'll remain in Grand Rapids for now.
The Detroit Red Wings and GM Steve Yzerman are hoping
Sebastian Cossa takes another step forward in 2025-2026.
He may but the goalie of the future for the team, but the 1st-round pick isn't ready yet, according to Yzerman. For now, they'll have to be patient with him.
At the exit interviews at the end of the regular season, Yzerman would explain his plan for Cossa.
«We are looking for him to take another step. I'm not prepared today to put him in the NHL,» GM Steve Yzerman said in his season wrap-up press conference last Monday.
Though Cossa played exceptionally well this year, he believes that the second-half ot he season for the 1st-round pick, didn't go as well as he'd hoped.
In a weird coincidence, Cossa would have to be pulled after giving up four goals to the Texas Stars in one period, in a best-of-5 playoff series.
Not a good look for
Cossa.
While the fault isn't entirely on him, he is the last line of defense for the Griffins and was unable to play his best hockey when the worst was bearing down on him.
Veteran goalie
Jack Campbell would have to put in the net to backstop the team the rest of that night, giving up nothing to the Stars.
Fans hope the 22-year-old will make it to the NHL soon, but it may be too early to bring him up. While he won't need waivers to be sent back to Grand Rapids, Yzerman isn't ruling bringing him up to Detroit he needs to see better play out of him though and his playoff performances, haven't been inspiring.
«And playoffs for him are as important as they are for maybe more important (than) for anybody. But again, he continues to trend in the right direction. But today I'm not prepared to say he's going to play in the NHL next year. He's got to do more. «
The Red Wings future depends on Cossa's development in Grand Rapids, as right now the team's goaltending isn't exceptional, but it's reliable.
In Grand Rapids, Cossa finished the season with a record of 21-15-5, 2.45 GAA, and a .911 save percentage.
