Detroit Red Wings young defenseman reflects on personal goals and disappointment in the 2024-25 season
Reflecting on his first full NHL season with the Detroit Red Wings after years of development in the AHL, defenseman Simon Edvinsson views it as a largely successful season.
«It was a solid season,» he said in an
interview with Hockey Sverige. «I hit many of the targets I set beforehand.»
However, one key goal he set for himself didn't come to fruition, likewise for several other Red Wings including team captain
Dylan Larkin, who
recently voiced his frustration with the team not making it past the regular season.
«Making the playoffs was a goal I didn't achieve,» Edvinsson noted. «But overall, I'm pretty satisfied.»
Edvinsson tallied up 31 points in 78 games, including seven goals, and led the team with a plus-12 rating.
«I feel really confident with and without the puck,» he said.
The 6-foot-6 Swede believes he's become a everyday NHL player.
«My determination has grown the most,» Edvinsson said. «My puck handling and defensive play have also progressed well.»
Edvinsson's confidence extends to his equipment, his stick, longer than NHL regulations allow, required a special approval from the league.
«I'm not sure of the exact length, but it's long,» he told Aftonbladet. «You need a waiver, but my height qualifies me.»
While a playoff clinch didn't happen, Edvinsson is gaining international experience, debuting for Sweden's Tre Kronor at the IIHF World Championship on home ice in Stockholm.
