According to a a report from Detroit Red Wings reporter of The Athletic Max Bultman, injury concerns made Steve Yzerman think twice about acquiring John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks.
Detroit Red Wings acquired John Gibson in a trade that was unexpected, but according to inside information from Max Bultman, it's been Yzerman's plan for months.
The Athletic's Red Wings reporter revealed that on March 7th Yzerman was ready to acquire John Gibson, but injury concerns scared the organization.
"Saturday's Gibson deal was not out of nowhere. Gibson, famously, has had his name floating in trade rumors for years now, and Yzerman revealed on the draft broadcast he's been talking to Anaheim general manager Pat Verbeek about Gibson since the trade deadline. But Gibson had been dealing with injuries around the deadline, Yzerman said, which meant the timing didn't work."

That didn't hold back Yzerman from getting his man, in a deal that surprised many.
"The two sides circled back leading up to the draft, though, and finally came to a deal, which landed Gibson in Detroit at the cost of a 2027 second-round pick, a 2026 fourth-round pick and veteran goaltender Petr Mrázek."
Injury concerns loom for John Gibson
There has been no word on if the 31-year old John Gibson's fully recovered from his injury, but one could only hope.
The Red Wings are counting on Gibson to be their main man in goal, something the team has yet to witness in quite some time.
Gibson is expected to have the starting position to himself, with Cam Talbot providing support when needed.
«We're counting on him, obviously, to give us quality starts and upgrade our team in net,» Yzerman said.
At the moment, this seems like a homerun by Yzerman.
With the 2025-26 season just a few months away, we will know the answer.
