After being selected in the first round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, Riley played three seasons of NCAA hockey with Cornell University.
During the 2010 offseason, Riley joined the Canes
via trade and would make his NHL debut with Carolina on December 21st, 2011. Riley would score his first career goal the very next season on March 3, 2013, adding two assists for a three-point night. Riley played 242 regular-season games for Carolina before signing with the NHLBruins
during the 2016 offseason, where he'd play the next two seasons. After signing with the BlueJacketsNHL in 2018 and playing 179 games with the club, Riley was acquired by the MapleLeafs ahead of the 2020 postseason. Riley later joined the
NHLJets, Arizona Coyotes, and TBLightning before playing the final of his 628 games with the NYRangers
in 2023-24.
