John Tortorella has officially been hired in a major new coaching opportunity
Controversial former NHL head coach John Tortorella's time with the Philadelphia Flyers ended in March when he was fired, but it surely didn't take him long to land a new gig, and it might be the biggest of his career.
John Tortorella is not down and out yet.
The former Philadelphia Flyers head coach has officially found a new opportunity.
He'll be joining Mike Sullivan, his former New York Rangers assistant coach, along with Minnesota Wild coach John Hynes and assistant David Quinn in Milano-Cortina, Italy.
Tortorella will be joining Team USA as an assistant coach, a role he served in during the Four Nations Face-Off, for the team led by Sullivan.
John Tortorella's Tough End In Philadelphia Leads to Team USA Opportunity
Tortorella was caught on a hot mic berating defenseman
Cam York, which was the
final straw for Danny Briere and the Flyers organization.
Following a 7-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, Philadelphia's 11th loss in 12 games (1-10-1), Tortorella said:
"I'm not really interested in learning how to coach in this type of season, where we're at right now."
He'll be there behind Team USA's bench by the grace of Mike Sullivan, another colleague whom he once gave a job to when he was head coach of the Rangers from 2009 to 2013.
The former Philadelphia Flyers coach, who has one Stanley Cup to his name, was unable to find a job coaching in the NHL, joining Peter Laviolette, Gerard Gallant, and Bruce Boudreau in finding other opportunities elsewhere.
