While we await the fate of Patrick Kane, the Detroit Red Wings' GM Steve Yzerman will have to work his magic to find forwards to push the team into contention.

The Detroit Red Wings have issues. They have holes across the lineup and have been on a nearly decade-long playoff drought. This year was the ninth year, and sixth of the rebuild.
While no one expected Steve Yzerman to win a Stanley Cup right away, improvement is needed. You expect players to progress, and some have, and some acquisitions have proven to be fruitful (Alex DeBrincat & Patrick Kane).
While others languish and have found themselves as place holders. That time needs to go, as with Todd McLellan at the helm, a playoff spot is the next step.
Who are three forwards that could put the Red Wings back on the path to victory?

Ryan Donato, Chicago Blackhawks

Ryan Donato had a career year in Chicago. Many NHLers who have had trouble finding their best game have proven they're underrated in Chicago's system. A low-pressure environment has proven best for Donato, who this season posted a career-high 62 points (31-31) and can be moved up and down the lineup.
And can be utilized on the power-play. Donato has no new contract yet, and last earned $2 million AAV. He'd be a great addition, and he fights for the puck everywhere on the ice.

Brock Boeser, Vancouver Canucks

While some people may want Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser would be a great fit in Detroit. Boeser posted 50 points in 2025 (25-25) in 75 games. He's a more than capable top-six forward who can play on the power play and has the kind of sniping ability that could make the Red Wings playoff contenders.
His $6.65 million contract expires at the end of the season, and he could be a fit on the top two lines in Detroit easily.

Claude Giroux, Ottawa Senators

Giroux is the kind of leadership you need when you're making a run to the playoffs. His production remains consistent even as he ages, as he scored 50 points (15-35) in 2025.
His $6.5 million deal expires at the end of the season, and he could earn $5.2 million AAV on his next contract, according to AFP Analytics.
While he'd prefer to stay with his hometown Senators, Steve Yzerman should take advantage of free agency to see if Giroux could be lured away, and the 37-year-old take on the task of making the Red Wings a competitive bunch with his leadership, tenacity, and lethal offensive skills on the ice.
