Detroit Red Wings Among Top Pursuers For Top Free Agent, Per David Pagnotta
According to David Pagnotta, the Detroit Red Wings are among the top pursuers to sign one of the best free agents available on the market this summer.
According to a new report from David Pagnotta, the Red Wings are expected to pursue one of the best defensemen available:
Aaron Ekblad, if he were to hit the market.
Set to become a free agent on July 1st, Ekblad could seek a big contract, likely too big for the Florida Panthers.
Pagnotta revealed that the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs will also try to sign him if he becomes available:
"David Pagnotta & EJ Hradek: Edmonton, Toronto and Detroit among the teams that will look at signing Aaron Ekblad if he hits free agency - NHL Network"
Ekblad has been playing an important role for the Panthers in the past several years, and still does. In the Panthers' current run, the 29-year-old veteran scored four goals and eight assists, with a +4 plus/minus in 17 games.
He would be a great addition for the Red Wings. His skills, leadership, and experience could help the team's young core reach the next level.
However, Ekblad mentioned in recent comments that he'd like to remain in Florida, meaning he could accept a lower salary to stay with the Panthers.
"I live and breathe for the Florida Panthers. I bleed for the Florida Panthers. I've given my body and everything to this team. I want to keep doing it forever, for as long as they'll let me keep coming to the rink."
