What do Gary Bettman, Steve Yzerman, and Patrick Kane have to do with the Detroit Red Wings' current salary cap penalties?

The Detroit Red Wings are one of 11 NHL teams that will be punished by the NHL's current "hard-cap" system, which Agent Allan Walsh hates. Who can blame him? It's inflexible and punitive.
Carolina Hurricanes: $33K - $1.076MM
St. Louis Blues: $2.153MM
Dallas Stars: $368K
Detroit Red Wings: $871K
Edmonton Oilers: $150K - $250K
Los Angeles Kings: $213K
Minnesota Wild: $1.1MM - $1.15MM
Montreal Canadiens: $1.728MM - $2.308MM
New Jersey Devils: $1MM
New York Islanders: $600K - $850K
Toronto Maple Leafs: $626K
The Red Wings will have to take a hit this season, as the team finishes the 2024-2025 season with an overage.
An overage is when the team exceeds the salary cap available for the season, and it will carry into next. For the Red Wings they have players who have performance bonuses tied into their contracts, both old and young players carry these depending on the deal negotiated.
Now, the Red Wings will have only $871K in cap space to carry into the summer, as they have $2.88 million in bonuses to pay out, with $2.02 million in cap space available.
The culprit? Other than Gary Bettman's stiff-arming the NHLPA on the CBA, which made this happen, Patrick Kane's bonus, which cost the Red Wings a total of $1.75 million in bonuses.
He had a possibility of earning $2.5 million, but was unable to do so because the Wings didn't make the playoffs, hence he didn't play enough games this year to earn them all.
Three rookies earned bonuses this season as well, as Simon Edvinsson hit three bonuses paying hium an extra $638K, while Marco Kasper hit two bonuses netting him a total of $500K.
We can be grateful that the Red Wings will be experiencing a bump in the salary cap this offseason.
Otherwise, this is painful, but they're bonuses that have been rightly earned by some of the team's best players this year.
It will pose an issue for the team as they continue to retool this summer.
