The last nine years for the Detroit Red Wings have been defined by a Stanley Cup playoff drought; while Steve Yzerman continues to build a team for the future, Dylan Larkin is setting the tone now.
Captain Dylan Larkin was frustrated with the end of their 2024-25 season, going home too early instead of breaking their playoff drought.
Larkin would call out Yzerman for building a subpar team, while the rebuild entered its 5th year. His tenure has been defined by great draft picks, but regular-season teams that underperform.
The Captain's 11th season in the league is sure to be an exciting year, as he's set the standard for the team this year.
Playoffs or bust, Dylan Larkin suggests for Red Wings
«I would think all 32 teams in training camp right now have that mentality. If you don't, there's an issue,» Larkin said following Wednesday's practice.
He added: «It's time to put ourselves in a position that we've been putting ourselves in the last few years and to just stick and just not be satisfied with that. We've got to make it and start to make noise in the playoffs.»
Larkin, whose linemate is Lucas Raymond, a former 1st-round pick and 80-point forward, hasn't seen the postseason yet. He believes that Swedish forward and defenseman Moritz Seider are too talented not to compete after the regular season ends.
And he wants to change their fortunes.
The Captain believes that the core of the Detroit Red Wings is is ready to compete in the playoffs.
They were close last season and the year beforehand.
Now is the time for Larkin to put the team on his back and drag them into a wildcard spot if he has to.
