Writer Michael DeRosa ranked this year's moves by Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings, which brought John Gibson into the lineup, and traded Vladimir Tarasenko.

We are past the trade deadline and free agency, as the 2025-26 NHL season is on the horizon.
To understand where the Detroit Red Wings are going, we must look to where they've been. There have been two significant moves made by Steve Yzerman this postseason.
One of which was bringing in veteran goaltender John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks, to ensure the crease has the right kind of talent to push the team into spring.
While they'd practice addition by subtraction, by trading forward Vladimir Tarasenko, a two-time Stanley Cup champion.

The Detroit Red Wings acquire John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks

The Detroit Red Wings acquired Anaheim Ducks' veteran goaltender John Gibson, in what could be seen as the best addition during the postseason. Yzerman's goals are transparent here, as Gibson has been a stable presence in Anaheim's net, in an otherwise chaotic situation.
Last season, he posted an 11-11-2 record, 2.72 GAA (goals against average), and a .911 save percentage.
This could bode well for the Red Wings should the blueline and the forwards play sound defense in front of the net.
The Ducks would receive goaltender Petr Mrazek, a 2027 2nd-round pick, and a 2026 4th-round pick for him.

Vladimir Tarasenko

The worst move, according to Michael DeRosa, was trading away veteran forward Vladimir Tarasenko.
Tarasenko, a former two-time Stanley Cup champion, provided the team with offense, just never enough during his time here.
In Paul Maurice's system, he found a way to flourish and become a reliable contributor, scoring 14 points (6-8) in 19 games and winning his second Stanley Cup.
But in 80 games with the Red Wings, he couldn't find a way to fit scoring 33 points (11-22).
Could this year be a year for him to bounce back and make Steve Yzerman eat crow?
