Detroit Red Wings acquire 22-year-old forward from the Ducks: The cost has been revealed by GM Pat Verbeek
We're now in August as free agency rolls on in the dog days of summer, as the rumor mill is swirling with Mason McTavish's name crossing the headlines, a report has now been confirmed involving the Anaheim Ducks and the Detroit Red Wings.
It appears that Steve Yzerman is viewing Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish as a potential fix to their offensive issues, which have been a key reason to their longtime playoff drought.
"The Detroit Red Wings are one team showing serious interest in a trade for Anaheim Ducks star Mason McTavish, sources tell RG.
There's a history between GMs Steve Yzerman and Pat Verbeek, which could help facilitate a deal."
McTavish has found his game in Anaheim recently, posting 52 points last season (22-30). As a former 3rd pick in 2021, it appears that he's developing nicely.
But for McTavish, the RFA hasn't signed a new deal in Anaheim, despite their $20 million AAV in space. Which gives us pause-what will be their next steps?
One NHL executive believes the Ducks will likely trade McTavish to Detroit, if he is moved.
Given how deep the connection GM Steve Yzerman has with GM Pat Verbeek, serving together in Detroit from 2006-10, they would later build a Stanley Cup contender in Tampa Bay.
Yzerman is expected tap in and try and see how "available" he is and what the cost to acquire McTavish would be.
The Cost To Acquire Mason McTavish
The 50-point forward is coming off an $894K contract and will be due a raise as an RFA.
As an RFA, he's highly valuable, as team-controlled contracts are desired in the NHL.
For McTavish, it won't come cheap to acquire him, as one anonymous NHL executive believes for the Wings, the cost won't be
Moritz Seider, but it'll start with Axel Sandin-Pellikka.
«A right-shot, top-four, and future top-pairing defenseman would be the starting point from what I know. I don't see the Wings moving Moritz Seider, so you're likely talking Axel Sandin-Pellikka.»
Sandin-Pellikka was drafted 17th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft and is entering the first year of his entry-level contract. He's set to be the Red Wings' future top-defenseman, that is, if Yzerman doesn't trade him first?
