Detroit Red Wings acquire gritty top-four defenseman from the New York Islanders in perfect trade proposal
The Detroit Red Wings and general manager Steve Yzerman have been on the lookout to acquire a top-four defenseman this summer, and the perfect trade proposal with the New York Islanders has emerged.
Apart from
Moritz Seider and Seider Edvinsson, there are not many defensemen within the Red Wings' roster holding down the fort.
While offensive production has been at an all-time high from last season's Red Wings forward group, it's quite clear that defensive support is needed in order to overcome their nine-year playoff drought.
Following a very underwhelming free agency period, which kicked off on July 1st of this summer,
Steve Yzerman stated that he is still in the works of acquiring a top-4 defenseman via trade.
"Yzerman says he will explore options to add a Top 4 defenseman, preferably a right shot but doesn't have to be."
Islanders' Romanov emerges as the ideal missing piece for the Red Wings
Speaking of a top-four defenseman,
Alexander Romanov still remains as a reliable option on the trade block of the New York Islanders, and a sizeable one to say the least.
This past season, Romanov tallied up a whopping 158 hits in 81 games played, teaching a very wise lesson to his opponents on the ice: keep your head up or you may be regretting it.
The 25-year-old defenseman would slot very well into the Red Wings' middle-aged defensive core.
2026 conditional 1st round pick*
2026 2nd round pick
It may be a large price tag, but it's well worth it to acquire Romanov, who's coming off a very team-friendly contract extension of 8 years with a $6.5M AAV.
