A trade between the Anaheim Ducks and the Detroit Red Wings involving Mason McTavish appears very likely, per new report.

According to a newly released report from RG.org, the Red Wings have emerged as a serious contender to land the 21-year-old center Mason McTavish if Anaheim can't get him signed to a new deal.
With negotiations reportedly stalling, the Wings could be in a great position to get him.

Mason McTavish to Get Traded to Detroit?

"One team I keep hearing that has continued to show strong interest is the Detroit Red Wings,» the source explained to RG.org. «Obviously there's a history there with Pat [Verbeek] and Steve [Yzerman], and I really think Steve sees McTavish as a player that would clearly change the whole dynamic of his team up the middle there."

The connection between Yzerman and Verbeek can't be overlooked either. Former teammates in Detroit and longtime front office collaborators in both Tampa Bay and Detroit, their mutual respect could help facilitate a deal.
McTavish, drafted third overall in 2021, has played 229 NHL games and posted 60 goals with 80 assists in his career so far. He's physical, skilled, and dangerous near the net, exactly the kind of player Detroit, and most NHL teams, are looking for.
Per Murphy, the Habs and the Canes are also interested:
"I've heard the Canadiens and Hurricanes have been keeping tabs, but one team I keep hearing that has continued to show strong interest is the Detroit Red Wings."

Detroit still has over $12 million in cap space, and with McTavish currently unsigned, any trade would need to include a contract extension. But even with the money available, it won't be cheap:
"Unless you're willing to get creative and knock Pat's socks off with a monster offer, I don't see him getting traded at this point,» a source told RG. «A right-shot, top-four and future top-pairing defenseman would be the starting point from what I know. I don't see the Wings moving Moritz Seider, so you're likely talking Axel Sandin-Pellikka."

Unless Yzerman is willing to sacrifice top assets, McTavish won't be in Detroit. However, considering he's on a hot seat, he could feel some pressure to make a deal happen.
