Detroit Red Wings acquire longtime Pittsburgh Penguins forward in intriguing trade pitch by NHL analyst
An intriguing trade pitch from an NHL analyst suggests the Detroit Red Wings could acquire a longtime Pittsburgh Penguin in a deal.
Following a relatively quiet offseason across the NHL, it was believed another wave of trades was expected before the start of the season.
Here we are, entering September, and nothing has happened yet, indicating many teams could complete trades in the coming weeks.
According to a new report, the Detroit Red Wings appear poised to be among those teams.
Red Wings Rumored To Complete Trade With The Pittsburgh Penguins
The Wings need to add talent to the lineup and have cap space. The Penguins want to get younger and are likely to make a few key players available, such as
Erik Karlsson,
Rickard Rakell, and
Bryan Rust.
Rust could provide interesting offensive depth to Detroit. Last season, he had the best season of his career, scoring 31 goals and 34 assists in 71 games in Pittsburgh.
The 33-year-old veteran has three seasons left on his six-year, $5,125,000 AAV deal. Kyle Dubas has full control of his fate in Pittsburgh, as the forward's no-movement clause has expired.
It wouldn't be surprising to see Dubas and the Penguins wait a few months before shipping away their veterans, possibly giving
Sidney Crosby,
Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and the others an ultimate chance at a playoff run.
As for the Wings, parting ways with two young players and a first-round pick for a veteran wouldn't necessarily fit Yzerman's long-term plan, but considering the pressure on the team to win this season, he could end up doing it.
