Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin makes major admission to the media in season-exit interview
Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin's production suddenly dipped after the recent 4 Nations Face-off tournament in March which contributed to the team's shortcoming point total of a playoff spot.
His production was one of the biggest storylines in their losing stretch, and it also caused loads of speculation.
Larkin tallied 23 goals in his first 55 games of the season, and ended up scoring just 7 in his final 27 games.
His faceoff percentage dropped and he didn't look like himself, Detroit was missing the captain they once had and needed at the final stretch of their season.
Larkin finished with 30 goals and 70 points, but it was down from the type of production we've seen from Larkin recent, what was the issue?
Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan hinted on several occasions that Larkin was 'pushing through' something, and during his lengthy season-exit interview on Saturday, the 28-year old forward confirmed his battle with injuries.
Larkin flat out admitted that he was indeed playing while injured at the 4 Nations Face-off tournament, which would ultimately hurt the Detroit Red Wings' playoff push.
«Picked up a couple injuries there, and that's just what it is,» Larkin said. «There was times I didn't feel good and was playing hurt and wasn't able to do a lot of things I wanted to. But I still went out there and tried my best. I did play all 82 games, but I would have liked to be more effective in a lot of them.»
Larkin was then asked if he would require any surgeries, and he gave a concerning response.
«I don't know yet.» The captain said
He now has a clean slated off-season ahead of him to recover and be prepared for next season, where the Red Wings look to snap their long playoff drought.
