The Detroit Red Wings are all but officially guaranteed to miss the playoffs, and a comedy of errors in tonight's game against Montreal confirmed their fate.

Fans who were hoping for the Detroit Red Wings to finally end their lengthy playoff drought are going to have to deal with some more disappointment.
Thanks to Detroits' 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens tonight, their chances at the postseason have all but officially been destroyed. And it was a comedy of errors during the game that helped make it possible.
In the 1st place, struggling defenseman Justin Holl was straight-up outmuscled by Cole Caufield immediately prior to Montreal's goal that tied the game 1-1.
That was followed by an all-time gaffe by J.T. Compher, who completely whiffed on what should have been a gift-wrapped goal after the puck deflected off the boards and right onto his stick as Canadiens goalie Samuel Montembeault was skating behind the net.
What should have been the easiest goal of Compher's career and a 2-1 Red Wings lead didn't happen.
And in the 3rd period, the Canadiens took the lead thanks both to a brutal giveaway from Vladimir Tarasenko combined with defenseman Albert Johansson taking himself out of the play to retrieve his helmet, leaving Josh Anderson all alone in front of Talbot.
The Canadiens are now a full 8 points ahead of the Red Wings with only 5 games left in their schedule. Unless Detroit wins out and Montreal loses all of their remaining games, their fate was all but officially sealed tonight at Bell Centre (just like it was last year, albeit under different circumstances).
