Detroit Red Wings Icon Tragically Passes Away at The Age of 88
Today, we regret to announce the passing of former Red Wings forward Alex Faulkner at the age of 88.
It was announced today that the first NHL player from Newfoundland, and former
Red Wings forward Alex Faulkner, passed away today, at the age of 88.
The news was reported on "X" by the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.
Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador President Jared Butler would issue a heartfelt statement after
Faulkner's passing, as sadness spread across the province on hearing the news.
I think for us, as a hockey family across this province, this is a big blow. I think as well, you're losing someone who broke a lot of ground as the first Newfoundlander to play in the NHL.
He's a once in a generation type of a fella. To accomplish something back in the day, it was incredibly hard to make the National Hockey League.
And he was an inspiration to many young people across our province.
Faulkner followed his brother George into professional hockey. George, now 91, would play with the Quebec Citadelles and Shawnigan Cataracts, and Alex would take it a step further.
He'd play in the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings, he'd only suit up for the Maple Leafs once before arriving in Hockeytown.
He'd be a key piece in the Red Wings' lineup during the defeat of their original-six rivals, the Maple Leafs, during the 1963 Stanley Cup finals.
After he'd end his short tenure in the NHL with the Wings, Faulkner would move on to play in the AHL with the Pittsburgh Hornets, the CPHL with the Memphis Wings, and the WHL with the San Diego Gulls.
Faulkner would play 101 NHL games during his career, and 100 of them in Detroit. His career totals are 32 points in the NHL (15 goals, 17 assists).
We send our deepest condolences to the Faulkner family and friends.
