Former World Series Champion Passes Away at Age 51 Following Tragic Roof Collapse in Dominican Nightclub
A former MLB World Series Champion and pitcher of the Detroit Tigers has passed away at the age of 51, his brother and others confirm, following a tragic incident at a nightclub in Dominican Republic.
A roof collapsing at Jet Set Nightclub in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, saw 144 people injured and 44 deceased.
According to reports, a live performance was taking place when the roof began to collapse, landing on the vast majority of people in attendance for a night out at the popular nightclub.
Former MLB star Octavio Dotel, who won a World Series Championship in 2011 with the St. Louis Cardinals, was one of many deceased.
According to a report from USA Today, Dotel was rescued from the debris fallen from the roof, and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Dotel has a long tenured career in the MLB, playing for the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Whitesox.
He's famously known as one of the four members of the Astros when they combined to no-hit the New York Yankees in 2003.
The Astros are one of few clubs to issue a statement on this saddened news that just came to light:
Dotel, 51, spent five seasons (2000-04) of his outstanding, 15-year Major League career with the Houston Astros. While in Houston, he was one of the top relievers in all of baseball and was a significant part of a dominant bullpen that included Hall of Famer Billy Wagner and All-Star Brad Lidge. A workhorse, Dotel's club-leading 159 appearances in 2002-03 combined were second in the Majors in that span, during which he posted a 2.15 ERA.
We send our sincerest condolences to the friends, family and those affected by this tragedy.
Rest in Peace, Octavio Dotel.
