Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jack Campbell makes save of the year candidate
The Grand Rapids Griffins game gave us a nice little treat as journeyman goalie Jack Campbell busted out some of his old moves to surprise us all.
Jack Campbell has seen his star power diminish in the NHL soon after leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. He'd play for a short period in Edmonton, where he would wind up playing second-string to
Stuart Skinner.
GM Steve Yzerman would give
Campbell another shot in the NHL with the Red Wings.Afterwards he'd enter the NHL/NHLPA players' assistance program, and the team would place him on waivers on November 17th, 2024. Since then he's been a fixture in the Griffins lineup.
He'd get recalled on an emergency basis during the last game of the season against his former team, the
Maple Leafs. But was sent back down soon after.
Now he's turning heads again in Grand Rapids as he has tapped into the skills we haven't seen in awhile, making stunning saves against the Iowa Wild.
We may yet see
Campbell in the NHL again if he can keep making highlight-reel saves like this.
This season, with the Grand Rapids Griffins, he's played a total of 14 games with a 5-7-1 record, 2.91 GAA, and a .893 save percentage.
He'll need to keep improving like he did in Bakersfield in 2023-2024, where he showed more promise, with an 18-13-1 record, 2.63 GAA, and a.918 save percentage.
Saves like this show that he still has the skills to make great saves and be a solid netminder. But when his one-year $775K contract expires at the end of the 2024-2025 season, will he remain a part of the Red Wings organization?
