GM Steve Yzerman knows how to draft prospects, as Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is tearing it up in the SHL playoffs with Skelleftea.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and his fellow Detroit Red Wings prospect Axel Sandin-Pellikka were part and parcel of a team that came from behind to help their team, Skelleftea, come back from a 2-0 deficit.
The big Norwegian forward, Brandsegg-Nygard, would come back to defeat Brynas 5-1 thanks to his help.
Nygard would contribute 2 goals, 2 shots on goal, 2 hits, and 14:08 TOI that night to solidify the team's victory.
Brandsegg-Nygard was another Nordic-born hockey player that the Red Wings selected 15th overall to add to the pipeline in 2024. That draft pick is looking smart right about now.
Nygard has collected four playoff goals with Skelleftea in nine games, while during the regular SHL season only posted 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists).
He may truly be a forward who was born for the playoffs. This regular season, he'd been nailed to the team's bottom-six but has ascended onto a line with Oskar Lindberg and Rickhard Hugg.
He'd find time on Skelleftea's special teams as well, scoring a power-play goal that night during the comeback.
Nygard's kept himself in the SHL playoff discussion, as he's tied in third for goals during Skelleftea's run this year.
Ahead of him? Former Grand Rapids Griffin forward Pontus Andreasson of Lulea.
«They said they would like to have me in the AHL and Grand Rapids,» Brandsegg-Nygard said of the Red Wings during the Hockeyprat podcast. «For me, it felt better to play in the SHL and instead come back (to North America) next year.»

Nygard was the first Norwegian-born player to be selected in the 1st-round of an NHL draft in 2024. GM Steve Yzerman wanted him to come play with the Griffins this year, but thought it better to remain in Sweden for now.
