It appears that Steve Yzerman buying out defenseman Justin Holl's contract has had purpose behind it for quite some time.
While Ekblad may not be a huge Mitch Marner-type of free agency signing, he is set to solidify the backend of the roster which deeply struggled this past season.
Viewing the current defensive pairings of the roster, it looks like Ekblad would smoothly slide into the second pairing alongside young defenseman Albert Johansson, where he will serve as a mentor.
