The potential arrival of Erik Karlsson to the Detroit Red Wings organization took an unexpected twist involving a Canadian organization.

While many believed that Karlsson could be a fit in Detroit, where puck-moving defensemen are still needed to round out the blue line, a new scenario has entered the conversation.
Indeed, according to a new report from Daily Faceoff, a potential return to Ottawa, where Karlsson's NHL career started, is suddenly gaining traction.
Tyler Yaremchuk and Matt Larkin discussed the idea of Karlsson returning to his former team on a recent podcast recording.
Here's what they had to say:
Tyler Yaremchuk: «This is just me throwing it out because it's a fun story, but what about Ottawa if you could find a way to make it work? Isn't that a nice homecoming, and on a team that wants to presumably take another step forward? I like that idea."

Matt Larkin: "But in terms of just mobility and leadership and just a fun story at a reasonable price on retained money, I think Erik Karlsson coming home would make a lot of sense. Especially because, of course, his wife Melinda Curry, they met in Ottawa, so that would be a homecoming for their family too."
The Senators have finally returned to the playoffs last year and are now looking to complete their lineup by adding veteran leadership and mobile defenders.
Karlsson, 35, may not be the Norris-caliber player he once was, but he still brings value. Last season, he tallied 53 points in 82 games, but scored over 100 points with the San Jose Sharks only two years ago.
From Pittsburgh's end, GM Kyle Dubas is open to moving Karlsson as part of their rebuild. But for any team to make it work, Pittsburgh would need to retain salary, and another contract would likely need to head the other way.
If Ottawa can make the cap math work, Detroit might not be the only team chasing Karlsson after all.
