Florida Panthers announce substantial $50M contract extension signing: How this benefits the Detroit Red Wings

The Panthers have announced a large contract extension with defenseman Niko Mikkola, and it's going to greatly benefit the Detroit Red Wings in their contract negotiations with Simon Edvinsson.
Little did they know they would also be greatly helping the Detroit Red Wings in their contract negotiations with 22-year-old defenseman Simon Edvinsson.
The Panthers have inked 29-year-old two-time Stanley Cup Champion Niko Mikkola to an eight-year extension worth $5M AAV.

The two-time defending Stanley Cup champs now have 11 players signed through at least 2030.

Niko Mikkola's $50M eight-year extension in Florida gives Detroit sense of direction in Simon Edvinsson's contract negotiations
Mikkola, 29, a left-handed shot defenseman, posted 22 points in 76 games this past season with the Panthers.
Edvinsson, 22, also a left-handed shot defenseman, posted a new career high of 31 points in 78 games this past season with the Red Wings and is due for a raise after the 2025-26 season is complete.
The Detroit Red Wings now have a very solid basis to work off of in contract negotiations thanks to the Florida Panthers.
