Former Red Wing and first-round picks' NHL hopes saved by eastern conference rival
A former first-round pick and Detroit Red Wing, Robby Fabbri, has saved his NHL hopes with a professional tryout offer from an Eastern Conference rival.
Drafted 21st overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2014, the NHL has been quite the rocky road for Robby Fabbri.
He debuted in the 2015-16 season with the Blues, tallying up 37 points alongside 18 goals, making a great first impression in the big leagues.
After
multiple knee injuries, which include ACL tears, he has been unable to find his groove again and reach the same point total as he did ten years ago during his debut season.
Fabbri did win a Stanley Cup with the Blues in the 2019 season and was later traded to the Detroit Red Wings and then the Anaheim Ducks in 2024.
After 442 career games played and 216 points, Fabbri now has to accept a professional tryout offer as a last-resort option to save his NHL hopes.
Pittsburgh Penguins sign Robby Fabbri to a PTO
The Pittsburgh Penguins, who have a rich history with Stanley Cup wins themselves, have signed Fabbri to a PTO in hopes of creating a spark in his career, as well as their youthful lineup.
"Hearing the Penguins will bring Robby Fabbri to training camp on PTO.
Former first-round pick. Has 106 goals and 216 points in 442 career games. Spent last season with Anaheim."
While Fabbri isn't the same 19-year-old he was when he was drafted in 2014, his veteran experience now at age 29 could provide a very purposeful mentorship for the Penguins' ongoing rebuild.
