Former Red Wings legend could join Detroit's front office following his departure from the Maple Leafs
Brendan Shanahan's contract with the Maple Leafs hasn't been renewed, and with news of him looking for work with the Islanders, GM Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings should pounce.
Brendan Shanahan was the President of Hockey Operations & Alternate Governor for the Maple Leafs for the last eleven years.
This post-season has brought on what could be a reshaping of the team's identity and front office.
That is because not only have the Leafs decided to keep Brad Treliving to forge a new path in the
NHL, but they've also gotten rid of his predecessors, who built a team that wasn't built for the playoffs.
Brendan Shanahan joins other NHL coaches and front office executives on the unemployment line as he's looking for work.
While it's doubtful he'd hold the same position in the Detroit Red Wings front office, there's plenty of knowledge to pick from his head.
Shanahan was a part of the three Red Wings teams that won Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998, and 2002.
While we could consider his time with MLSE unsuccessful, he's found talented players and kept them tied to the Maple Leafs franchise in hopes they'd help win a Stanley Cup. The core four just wasn't built for the playoffs, even with a coach like Craig Berube at he helm.
However, it just wasn't meant to be, as slowly over the years we've seen Sheldon Keefe, then Kyle Dubas, and now Brendan Shanahan exit the organization.
Shanahan knows the Red Wings franchise well and could find other ways of adding to the struggling team's success.
Yzerman's choice of Todd McLellan was a great choice and a good start. Could Chris Illitch find use in bringing back a Red Wings legend?
Shanahan is one of nine NHLers with over 600 goals and 2000 PIMs to his name.
