Goaltending trade reportedly underway in Detroit and three teams are named
With the acquisition of John Gibson during the offseason, the Detroit Red Wings have a goalie pipeline that could find use for Sebastian Cossa as a trade piece, and now three teams are reported to be vying for his talent; where will Steve Yzerman send him?
The Detroit Red Wings have an issue.
A wealth of prospects in the system, as they both have future starters,
Trey Augustine in the NCAA with the Michigan State Spartans, and
Sebastian Cossa in Grand Rapids.
With the flux of goalie talent, the recent acquisition of John Gibson, and the Red Wings' backup, Cam Talbot, what lies in wait for Cossa's future?
Cossa is a former 1st-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings and a projected starter in the NHL once he fully develops. With a bright future ahead of him, there are three NHL teams that are linked to the Red Wings prospect.
An NHL Insider expanded upon this thought, as Cossa has been named as a trade chip:
Cam Robinson said, "the fact that they have Augustine there in the Red Wings system allows (Cossa) to be an expendable chip. Now, there's no pinch point...they don't have to move this guy.
Augustine is a non-starter for trades, as he could be the Red Wings' starting goalie of the future. Leaving a possibility of another year of John Gibson and Cam Talbot in the net, as they both have time remaining on their contracts.
GM Stan Bowman and The Edmonton Oilers Need a Goalie
The Edmonton Oilers are one NHL team who have been linked to Sebastian Cossa. With the rumor mill picking up, the team has let goalie prospect Olivier Rodrigue become a free agent, leading us to believe there's another move down the road.
With
Stuart Skinner's inconsistency being front and center, Bowman has been in touch with the Red Wings about both Augustine and Cossa.
The Florida Panthers just won another Stanley Cup. But their prospect pipeline is bare, as the latest goalie they acquired was
Daniil Tarasov from the Columbus Blue Jackets. After losing
Spencer Knight, the crease in Charlotte could use some shoring up.
That could come from Sebastian Cossa, as
Sergei Bobrovsky's future with the team is in question, with two years remaining on his $10 million AAV deal. Cossa could be the Panthers' goalie of the future if he can beat out both
Brandon Bussi and Tarasov.
The Detroit Red Wings would ideally send someone like Cossa out of the conference, and the Hurricanes might not be a bad idea. With the team's extension of
Frederik Andersen, the 36-year-old's career isn't for long, and they have to prepare for the future, as Pyotr Kotchetkov can't guard the crease alone.
