The Detroit Red Wings could make a splash and acquire top-six forward Mason McTavish from the Anaheim Ducks, and it was just confirmed what it would cost GM Steve Yzerman.

The Detroit Red Wings' forward group looks a little thin at the moment.
While Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Patrick Kane, and Alex DeBrincat are all considered mainstays, they could utilize a little help.
For Steve Yzerman, at this point in the year, it'll come in the form of a trade or an offer sheet, depending on how bold he wants to be.
The team is reportedly in talks with GM Pat Verbeek of the Anaheim Ducks, someone Yzerman already has a relationship with; they worked together for the Wings from 2006 to 2010.
He is reportedly inquiring about the availability of RFA Mason McTavish, which would add another 50+ point forward to the lineup.
McTavish scored 52 points (22-30), and Leo Carlsson lined up to be another 1st-round pick in 2023 last season.

Mason McTavish: The Cost To Acquire

The Detroit Red Wings have the benefit of a deep prospect pool. That being said, the Red Wings could dig deep into their pockets and see what they could use to pry McTavish from Verbeek's hands.
McTavish is a former 3rd OA draft pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, and has been developing nicely in the league. He's played 229 games in his NHL career, scored 140 points (60-80), and is the 2C in Anaheim.
The RFA remains unsigned, and you have to wonder whether or not he'll be traded before the beginning of the year.
What would Steve Yzerman have to give up in return for one of the Ducks' best forwards?
Given how the teams have already worked on one trade this offseason for John Gibson, the talks are likely ongoing for other opportunities, including McTavish.
From RG.Org:
«A right-shot, top-four and future top-pairing defenseman would be the starting point from what I know. I don't see the Wings moving Moritz Seider, so you're likely talking Axel Sandin-Pellikka.»

According to reports, it could end up being a top prospect like right-shot defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellika, selected 17th overall in 2023.
The team doesn't need wingers, but they are looking to fortify their blue line down the road, which Axel Sandin-Pellika would do perfectly.
It may be an expensive gamble for Yzerman and the Red Wings to send away a 17th overall future power-play quarterback for a forward like McTavish.
But it could be worth it.
