Former Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, who isn't popular among Red Wings fans after his last several years on the job, has landed a new gig.
Former Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, who left the Red Wings in a horrid state of disrepair when current GM Steve Yzerman returned to the club in April 2019, is reportedly set to accept a new executive job.
Just days after the Los Angeles Kings parted ways with GM Rob Blake, Holland's name has come up from analyst Elliotte Friedman in his most recent "
32 Thoughts" podcast.
Like I said on Friday, I said Ken Holland's name has become very prominent in that search. We'll see where this week takes us. Initially, I was under the impression and a lot of people were under the impression that Marc Bergevin would slide into that job. Now it appears much less likely, and we'll see where this week takes us, but Holland's candidacy for this job is legitimate.
Friedman noted that while he doesn't expect Holland to be with the Kings for a long period of time, their belief that they're close to contention would make sense in the short-term for Holland to join.
I think there was a point this year where it sounded like he wanted one more shot at it. Now it was going to depend on how it would all work and structure and things like that. I don't necessarily think it will be a long term deal. I'm curious to see if this closes what the term of the deal is, but the Kings don't think they're far away and that makes sense. I don't know if a 5-7 year rebuild makes sense for him, right? So the fact that the Kings want to contend, I think that makes a lot more sense for him.
The current president of hockey operations for the Kings is Luc Robitaille, a former Red Wings forward whom Holland signed to a 2-year contract in the summer of 2001 that eventually resulted in Robitaille's 1st and only Stanley Cup win as a player.
Holland also managed the Edmonton Oilers from the summer of 2019 (just days after Yzerman's return to Detroit) through their unsuccessful run to the Stanley Cup Final last spring.
