The New York Islanders will be significantly disadvantaged tonight as they host the Detroit Red Wings without one of their best defensemen.

The Detroit Red Wings will be in Long Island tonight to face the New York Islanders and the 2025 first overall pick, Matthew Schaefer.
The rookie has been off to an amazing start to the season, with seven points, including two goals, in six games.
His great skills and work ethic brought him where he's at, and there's no denying his success so far. However, he's well surrounded by players who can step up both defensively and physically to allow him to grow and play freely on the ice.
Ahead of the game, the organization announced that a veteran defenseman who's been holding that role since the season started won't be in the lineup.

Islanders Place Key Defenseman On Injured Reserve Ahead Of Wings Matchup

The 25-year-old defenseman has already missed the last two games, and it's unclear when he will be able to return to the lineup.
The Isles' General Manager, Mathieu Darche, didn't rule out the LTIR option yesterday, hours before the team decided to waive Marc Gatcomb to clear a roster spot for a potential call-up.
He also added that he's unlikely to play Saturday as well but stated the injury is «nothing serious.»
"We're looking at different options right now. That's part of our job, to play with the CBA and all the rules that come with it, to make sure you have a compliant roster. We're looking at different options."

Darche also announced that Pierre Engvall will miss at least five or six months after having ankle surgery:
"We decided to get it fixed right now so it doesn't linger. The amount of term on his contract [which runs through 2029-30], instead of him not playing at full strength, we might as well get it fixed."

Marshall Warren and Isaiah George are both considered the top candidates to get called up from the Bridgeport Islanders.
