Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Kane hopes that when the time comes, an American-born hockey legend will be in attendance when he reaches his next historic milestone.
We've witnessed Patrick Kane complete history once this season, achieving a career milestone of being the fifth American-born player to score 500 goals.
He has higher aims for his ambitions, as he seeks to pen his name in the league history books once more.
With only four points (1,371 at the moment, to be exact), Kane can be the one to surpass Mike Modano, a former Detroit Red Wings player, in the books again.
He wants to put his name above Modano's for all-time points scored by an American-born forward.
This season, although plagued by injuries in the early and middle parts of the year, he remains at the top of his game. Coming off a 59-point season last year (21-38), he is in the discussion of one of the best players to lace up their skates in the sport.
Detroit Red Wings star Patrick Kane is poised to surpass forward Mike Modano in the record books
Kane, who grew up watching the former Red Wings forward and played against him as a former Chicago Blackhawk, would love to have Modano present to witness history.
"I haven't talked to him recently, maybe as it gets closer, we'll see what happens as we get closer to the number," Kane said. "But I read that he'd like to be in attendance for it, which would be pretty cool."
Modano, who is a former Stanley Cup winner with the Dallas Stars, with Brett Hull and Derian Hatcher (both former Red Wings), would love to be in the audience when the record is surpassed.
"I knew years ago that he might be one that if he stayed healthy, that he would be the guy that kind of goes after it," Modano said. "I'd love to be there and definitely would make the effort to be there for that one."
Like Kane, Modano was a former first-round draft pick and joined the Minnesota North Stars before their relocation to Texas in 1993.
"It would be special, he was a player I really enjoyed watching when I was younger, the face of USA hockey for a long time," Kane said of Modano. "A lot of flair to his game with skill, speed, explosiveness, a fun player to watch, and one of the best American players of all time."
His play style was influential for many future NHL stars, including Kane. Modano was the face of USA Hockey for the future HOFer.
It'd be very sublime if Kane could have him present while he achieves his next milestone in a Red Wings uniform. Kane is one of several Red Wings players who are reaching impressive career milestones this season.
