Gary Bettman and the NHL's hard cap system (something Agent Allan Walsh hates) will incur a fine on the Detroit Red Wings, as Patrick Kane's bonus eats into the team's salary cap space, leaving only $871K as a result for GM Steve Yzerman to work with.

The hard-cap system is a result of the league and the NHLPA's negotiated CBA, which Agent Allan Walsh believes the league needs to rid themselves of. It's punitive and lacks any flexibility.
As a result the NHL will impose a fine on the Detroit Red Wings this year. The reason? The Detroit Red Wings will have to pay a bonus to Patrick Kane.
Here's a list of 11 teams with overages, including the Red Wings.
Carolina Hurricanes: $33K - $1.076MM
St. Louis Blues: $2.153MM
Dallas Stars: $368K
Detroit Red Wings: $871K
Edmonton Oilers: $150K - $250K
Los Angeles Kings: $213K
Minnesota Wild: $1.1MM - $1.15MM
Montreal Canadiens: $1.728MM - $2.308MM
New Jersey Devils: $1MM
New York Islanders: $600K - $850K
Toronto Maple Leafs: $626K

The Red Wings will finish the 2024-2025 regular season with a penalty imposed on the team due to Patrick Kane's bonus. The penalty is called an overage, due to the fact that the team had exceeded its available salary cap.
Kane is one of multiple players this year who had a performance bonus attached to their contract.
The bonus will cost the Red Wings dearly, as a result they will carry it into the next season are left with only $871K available at the moment.
Kane's bonus only accounted for $1.75 million of the $2.02 million overall, which has negatively affected the team.
Showtime had an ability to earn a total of $2.5 million in bonus money overall but wouldn't be able to capture the remaining $750K due to the team missing the playoffs this year.
Thankfully, the Red Wings will receive an increase in the salary cap along with 31 other teams which should make the pain sting considerably less in the future.
But for now, the Red Wings will have to deal with the fact that superstars do, in fact, cost money.
