Recent Updated Rankings Regarding the Red Wings Puts GM Steve Yzerman on the Hot Seat
The Athletic's offseason improved rankings have been revealed and it may not sit well amongst an already irate Detroit Red Wings fan base.
As the Detroit Red Wings look to get out of their longtime playoff drought, has Steve Yzerman done enough this past free agency to get them over the edge?
According to NHL staff writer Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic, the Red Wings have moved up 6 spots in their rankings compared to last season, climbing to the ninth most-improved team of the offseason.

Out: Vladimir Tarasenko, Tyler Motte, Jeff Petry, Alex Lyon, Petr Mrazek
The Red Wings may have mostly operated around the edges, but the team looks better because of it, even if none of the players the team brought in look like they bring a lot to the table. James van Riemsdyk and Mason Appleton aren't anything special, but it beats playing someone such as Tyler Motte. Jacob Bernard-Docker doesn't look like much either, but if the alternative is Jeff Petry or Justin Holl, that's a small win for the Red Wings, too."

Can John Gibson bring the Red Wings back to the playoffs
Luszczyszyn notes that the biggest change is acquiring goaltender John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks, but his spotty track record as of late deems Detroit out of a playoff spot still.
"It's a patchwork job and the team still needs work overall to make the postseason, but the Red Wings do look incrementally more competitive."
Despite looking "incrementally more competitive" on paper, the Red Wings are still deemed to not be heading to the playoffs yet again.
The 'Yzerplan' continues to look shambly, and the 60-year-old general manager could genuinely be on the hot seat after this season.
