The Detroit Red Wings completed a roster move ahead of the game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday that could signal the end for a longtime veteran forward.
Both the Detroit Red Wings and the Grand Rapids Griffins have had impressive starts to their seasons.
The Wings are 2nd in the Atlantic Division, only one point behind the Montreal Canadiens, while the Griffins are still undefeated this year after eight games.
In fact, that start is the best in the AHL since the Utica Comets had a league-best 13-0 start.
That team is poised for greatness this season, with top Red Wings prospects leading the charge surrounded by NHL veterans such as
Erik Gustafsson.
Yesterday, the Wings sent another NHLer to the Griffins.
The 18th overall pick in 2010 hasn't taken part in a single game with the Wings this season and returns to the AHL, where he took part in four games already.
The 33-year-old veteran forward signed a one-year contract with the Wings during the offseason, and unless injuries strike the lineup, the end of his NHL journey in Detroit appears close.
Dylan Larkin opened up on his team's performance in his post-game comments:
"We showed we can play on the road and in this building especially. I thought that was a winnable game. We just didn't get the offense, the bounces, or the puck going into the net that we needed. Gibby played unbelievable, which is a positive sign. The PK was good again, but it's a good learning lesson. We got to execute better, and when we get our chances, we got to bury down."
Head coach Todd McLellan liked his team's effort but acknowledged how great the Golden Knights are:
"I thought it was a close game. There were chances both ways, but the goaltenders stood in there fairly well. I thought we gave ourselves a chance to win. It would have been nice to have been a little more effective on, at least, the one full power play that we had. That may have been our opportunity, but just not enough sustained offensive time. A team like that can do that to you."
The Wings will be back on the ice Friday as they host the New York Rangers.
As for the Griffins, Austin Watson and the team will look to extend their winning streak to nine games on November 12 against the Toronto Marlies.
