The Detroit Red Wings found a diamond in the rough, acquiring Max Plante in the 2024 Los Angeles NHL draft with their 47th overall pick.
Steve Yzerman should be congratulated for the deep prospect pool he's built in Detroit.
But there is another player who remains unsung and is waiting in the wings (yes, I know, bad metaphor).
Detroit Red Wings Prospect Max Plante Tears Up The NCAA
He's played a total of 19 games this season for an NCAA team that has produced NHL prospects before, like
Dominic James, the former Captain who signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning recently.
In that time frame, Plante has shown he's a capable offensive producer, scoring 19 points (10-9).
"He's a smart, skilled two-way forward who makes some of the best passes you'll find at this level."
It makes sense; he's a player who's got a high hockey IQ and could evolve into a three-zone player in the NHL once fully developed.
He'll be joining Team USA for this year's IIHF World Junior Championship and could be a key piece in the lineup if he continues to produce at the rate he is now.
Last year, he scored 3 points (1-2) in 6 games in the U-20 WJC in 2024-25.
Plante could be joining the Red Wings sooner than we expect, but he'll remain available for
collegiate hockey until 2026-27 and could receive a call from Steve Yzerman to make the jump at the conclusion of that NCAA season.
Until then, he'll have to keep developing his two-way game with the UMD Bulldogs.
