Former Detroit Red Wings legend, Sergei Fedorov has decided to remove himself from consideration for his old head coaching job in the KHL with CSKA Moscow.
In a surprising turn of events, it appears
Sergei Fedorov's time as a head coach in the KHL is done.
He removed himself from consideration for his old role, as he told Russian News Agency TASS:
«I have no negotiations with the club,» Fedorov told Russian news agency TASS. «I will not be the head coach.»
Fedorov, now 55, coached the club from 2021-2024. He'd lead the CSKA Moscow HC to back-to-back Gagarin Cup titles.
Now, it's difficult to tell where he'll land next, as we can speculate that maybe he'll decide to return to the NHL after his brief success in the KHL.
Fedorov's #18 jersey was hung in the CSKA Moscow rafters. But in a contradicatory, and brutal end as soon as his team was eliminated from the playoffs in 2024, he was given a pink slip.
Fedorov's replacement fared no different, as Ilya Vorobyov's CSKA was eliminated in the 1st-round this year as well.
Fedorov has had some time to ponder his future outside of coaching professional hockey. In a surprise to many, he once said he'd consider returning only to CSKA in the same role he held previously, now, after a year away, he doesn't think he wants to continue that path.
«In my understanding, I have finished my coaching career,» Fedorov said at the time. «After I left CSKA, I did not receive any new offers. I did not pick up the phone.»
While he didn't receive any offers from any KHL clubs for a return to the bench, maybe it'd be wise for Steve Yzerman to pick up the phone and lure him back to Detroit in some fashion?
A short hiatus likely helped me gain clarity on his next steps, and he could improve the
Red Wings' front office immediately.
