Red Wings' rookies first set of NHL goals help Detroit defeat the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday
Detroit Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan is smiling ear to ear as one 7th-round pick's pair of goals today has helped them defeat the Edmonton Oilers in Sunday's action, extending their winning streak to five games.
The Red Wings have earned their fifth win this season, thanks to the help from the youth movement.
One player was a standout in today's game, Emmitt Finnie, a 201st overall pick by the Red Wings in 2023.
He's played six games for the Red Wings this season and scored a pair of goals today against the Oilers.
The win has helped get rid of the bad taste from the team's loss to the Montreal Canadiens during the home opener.
Emmitt Finnie's The Detroit Red Wings Bright Spot
The roster competition this season was so tight that it was difficult to tell who would make the cut, and with his play in 2025-26, it's easy to see
how he impressed Todd McLellan so easily.
In 6 games, he's scored 5 points (2-3), showing he's more than acclimated to the pressures and responsibilities of being a top-six player in the lineup.
The team, thanks to his help, is 5-1 in the Atlantic Division and has taken the top spot from the Martin St. Louis-led Montreal Canadiens.
One of Finnie's goals came from a juicy rebound off the Oilers' goaltender,
Stuart Skinner:
His 2nd goal of the game came from an empty net, which saw Stuart Skinner sitting on the bench while the team was attempting to press the Red Wings with an extra attacker.
Finnie's first career goal in the NHL comes only a game after defenseman Axel-Sandin Pellikka's first against the Tampa Bay Lightning the game before.
A prospect that should be exciting for both Red Wings fans and the front office as the puzzle pieces are coming together beautifully in Hockeytown.
