Defenseman Simon Edvinsson has played himself into a new contract, and the Detroit Red Wings and General Manager Steve Yzerman will have to open their pocketbooks significantly.

General Manager Steve Yzerman is proud of the core he's built for this season.
The 2025-26 Red Wings are atop the Atlantic, with a 5-1 record and a young, fledgling core.
One of those players who has been a key role player in this team is Simon Edvinsson.
He's played 109 games of NHL hockey and has scored 36 points (11-25) as a top-four defenseman.
He's found himself in favorable waters, as he's played up to the team's expectations and has yet to receive a contract extension.
But when he does, the Red Wings will have to open up their pocketbooks for a nice new deal for him.
Sportsnet's Rory Boylen:
«The sixth overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, Edvinsson scored 31 points in his first full NHL season, averaged 19:11 of ice time per game, and was trusted with penalty kill opportunities. Turning 23 in February, if Edvinsson improves from there, puts up 10 more points, and the Red Wings benefit from that in the standings, his new AAV could get shockingly high,» Boylen wrote.

Will the Detroit Red Wings back up the Brinks truck for Simon Edvinsson?

Sportsnet's Boylen believes that the Red Wings could find a way to lower the cost of Edvinsson's next deal by offering him a bridge deal.
But there's no telling how this could go, as if he goes for a long-term deal, he could fetch around the same kind of payday as Moritz Seider.
«GM Steve Yzerman could keep that lower by going the bridge deal route, but that would bring its own dangers in a few years when the cap is considerably higher. A seven-year deal now still could bring him in around Moritz Seider's $8.55 million AAV that he just signed in 2024 - and Edvinsson has a shot to go even higher,» Boylen wrote.

Yzerman is known for being a tough negotiator and won't cede ground right away.
He took both Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider into the beginning of training camp with negotiations.
Larkin's didn't happen until the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline.

Do you think defenseman Simon Edvinsson of the Detroit Red Wings will get a similar AAV (average annual value) to defenseman Moritz Seider?
