Wound up Detroit Red Wings fan attempts to strike player with a live octopus
Detroit Red Wings defenseman Ben Chiarot nearly got himself a slimy surprise when he was almost struck by an octopus a fan tossed onto the ice at Little Caesars Arena.
It's one of the most sacred traditions held by Detroit Red Wings fans, and one lucky individual got to experience it during
Detroit's 5-3 win win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.
A fan threw an octopus onto the ice at Little Caesars Arena that he had concealed under his clothing just seconds after Ben Chiarot's goal that gave Detroit an early 1-0 lead.
The fan, who was seated behind Detroit's bench, came within an inch of having the octopus actually hit Chiarot's skates as he was skating back toward the bench.
The octopus tradition for the Red Wings dates back to the 1950s.
The Red Wings play the divisional foe Panthers today
The Red Wings are right back in the swing of things this afternoon in Detroit, taking on the divisional foe Florida Panthers.
While the Red Wings are still mathematically alive, the Montreal Canadiens did win their game last night against the Philadelphia Flyers to once again move a full 6 points ahead of Detroit.
If the Red Wings are to end their postseason drought, they'll not only need to keep winning but to have their competition start losing games.
The Panthers are on the 2nd of a back to back, having played yesterday and needed to travel to Detroit.
Hopefully, the Red Wings can take advantage of their fatigue and make it 2 in a row.
