Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider has been named captain of Team Germany for the 2025 IIHF World Championships, where he will proudly represent his country starting May 9th.

Although the Detroit Red Wings' top defenseman, Moritz Seider, missed out on the NHL postseason, he's now set to compete across the Atlantic at the IIHF World Championships.
Seider will join fellow Red Wings players Lucas Raymond (Sweden) and Eduards Tralmaks (Latvia) in this prestigious tournament, representing his country.
This year holds special significance for Seider, as he's been honored with the captaincy of the German national team for the 2025 IIHF World Championship, a role announced by Team Germany.
For Seider, who has faced tougher challenges in the NHL, this leadership role is a welcome opportunity to shine.
Seider was the first Red Wing to confirm his participation in the event for Germany, as reported by Red Wings Insider.
This marks his fifth appearance at the World Championships, where he previously played a key role in securing a silver medal for Germany in 2023-the country's first medal at the tournament in over 70 years.
The young defenseman has been a leader for Germany, tallying up 19 points (5 goals, 14 assists) across 33 IIHF World Championship games.
While the 2024-2025 season with the Red Wings ended in disappointment, Seider's new role with Germany could unlock a new level of play in Detroit next year.
In 82 games this season, Seider recorded 46 points (8 goals, 38 assists).
With six years left on his recently signed contract, which carries an AAV of $8.5 million, Seider is locked in with Detroit until he becomes an unrestricted free agent at age 30.
