Acquisition: Detroit Red Wings officially land one of the most intriguing free agent defenseman on the market
The Detroit Red Wings landed one of the most intriguing free agent defenseman available and is set to take part in the team's development camp, set to start today.
North Dakota junior
Jake Livanavage, an undrafted but highly skilled puck-moving defenseman, will be among the more interesting names to watch as Detroit's 2025 Development Camp kicks off at Little Caesars Arena.
Alongside Livanavage, the Red Wings will get their first on-ice look at a the prospects selected at last week's NHL Draft in Los Angeles.
The Winnipeg native tore up the WHL with Everett last season, piling up 40 goals and 82 points, while earning WHL Western Conference Second All-Star Team honors. Over two seasons with the Silvertips, Bear has already stacked up 141 points in 142 games.
Detroit also used its second-round pick to grab Eddie Genborg, a big 6-foot-2 winger who split time between Sweden's top junior circuit and the SHL.
This week's camp roster is stacked: 16 forwards, nine defensemen, and six goaltenders, including familiar names like last year's first-rounder Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, standout NCAA goalie Trey Augustine, and recent trade addition
Jesse Kiiskinen.
They'll be split into Team Howe and Team Lindsay for daily skill work, off-ice sessions, and scrimmages.
But it's Livanavage who might end up being the under-the-radar gem. If his time at North Dakota is any clue, he's the type of modern, skating defenseman most teams would love to have on their blue line. Detroit fans should keep a close eye on him this week.
Livanavage is likely to return in the NCAA next season, but will have great tips on what to work on during the summer to make sure to come back as a better player at training camp.
