Capitals' Eight-Year Extension of Jakob Chychrun Alters Red Wings' Off-Season Plans
Capitals general manager Chris Patrick has announced a major $72 million extension for his second-pairing defenseman, Jakob Chychrun.
The 26-year old defenseman carried an average of $4.6 million per season, and the Red Wings would've been appealed to offer him a nice pay raise, alongside a change of scenery.
But would they have offered him $9 million per season for a whopping
eight years? Likely not, this appears to be a major overpay.
Chychrun averages over 20:56 minutes of ice time per night with the Capitals and has scored 18 goals while adding 25 assists in 65 games this season.
A missed opportunity by Yzerman, or a blessing in disguise?
The former 16th overall pick has a rough
injury history, that's kept the young defenseman out over 100 games since joining the NHL in 2016.
Chychrun endured a concussion in his first few months after making his debut with the Arizona Coyotes.
It seems as though the Red Wings dodged a bullet, despite this altering their off-season plans.
