Detroit Red Wings' Stanley Cup Champion Thinking About His Future
The Detroit Red Wings haven't been a top NHL team for a long time, and now the last active player from their 2008
2008 Stanley Cup winning team is unsure about continuing his hockey career.
Valtteri Filppula, a 41-year-old center, is deciding whether to keep playing after his Finnish team, Jokerit, failed to move up to Finland's top league, the SM-liiga.
Filppula spoke to
MTV, a Finnish TV network, saying:
«It was fun to play. I'm glad I kept going this season.»
He joined Jokerit, a team he played for earlier in his career, in hopes to get them get promoted to the next division. As captain, he even played without a salary to support the team's goal.
«Now we'll see,» Filppula said. «I don't have much time left in my career, but I'll think about it later. I'll take a couple of weeks off to reflect on this season and decide what's next.»
Filppula played for the Red Wings from 2005 to 2013 and returned from 2019 to 2021.
He was part of their 2008 Stanley Cup win, which was the biggest highlight of his career.
After leaving Detroit, he played for other NHL teams and in Europe to continue his love for the game.
His decision comes as Detroit struggles, missing the playoffs for nine straight years.
Filppula is taking time to think about whether to retire or keep playing, leaving his next move uncertain.
