The Detroit Red Wings and GM Steve Yzerman need to prioritize re-signing Patrick Kane, a three-time Stanley Cup champion.

The urgency for veteran players who can keep up with their younger peers in the lineup is paramount. Kane has proven that he still has what it takes to be a top-six winger in the NHL, flanking rookie Marco Kasper on the right.
He's scored a total of 59 points (21 goals, 38 assists) on a team that is still going through a rebuild, six years in.
Kane expressed a mutual interest in re-signing in Hockeytown, which GM Steve Yzerman needs to pounce on.
Re-signing Kane early would give Yzerman an idea of what to expect and plan for July as free agency approaches.
The team needs help in the goalscoring department, and with Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider signed, getting ahead of the curve could help Yzerman save cap space for another top-six winger in free agency.
As of right now, their most productive forwards are Kane, DeBrincat, and Raymond, and with the free agents available will need to save considerable cap space for any of these forwards named below.
Sam Bennett, Mitch Marner, John Tavares, Brock Boeser, and Nikolaj Ehlers. In order to get an idea of what compensation Kane is after, and if he truly plans to stay in Detroit, the time to fire up negotiations is now.
With those big names available in free agency, they will have to hold considerable cap space for any one of those forwards.
Though part of the selling point for someone like Bennett and Tavares should be the Red Wings organization itself, however, playing for an original-six team doesn't come without it's perks, and compensation is the main issue for any NHLer who is a proven forwards.
