In a trade completed today in hockey history, the Detroit Red Wings acquired a Stanley Cup champion from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Red Wings Acquire Stanley Cup Champion 54 Years Ago Today
Born in 1941 in Toronto, Conacher was never drafted by an NHL team, but still managed to make his way to the League through the minors and the AHL.
He won a Calder Cup with the Rochester Americans in 1965-66 and got his shot to compete in the NHL afterwards. In his first season with the Maple Leafs, he won a Stanley Cup.
He ended up traded to the Detroit Red Wings, where he played 22 games during the 1971-72 season.
The centerman eventually retired from hockey in 1975-76, following 155 regular season games and 12 playoff games in the NHL.
The Conacher family was one of the most dominant dynasties in hockey's early years.
The first generation featured three Hall of Famers: Charlie Conacher, Lionel Conacher, and Roy Conacher. Their collective achievements made the Conachers the most successful hockey family of the NHL's first three decades.
While the second generation, including Brian Conacher, Murray Henderson, and Pete Conacher, also reached the NHL, they did not match the same level of dominance.
