The Buffalo Sabres are going to go through a retool, and GM Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings should take advantage and upgrade defense by adding Bowen Byram.
The Buffalo Sabres have a logjam in the defensive position, and could find use for
Bowen Byram as a trade chip. As an RFA and Stanley Cup champion, the Sabres could stand to gain a reasonable return for him.
While the Detroit Red Wings could gain significant talent at the blue line which has been missing the past season.
While Byram hasn't found himself as the superstar both the Avalanche and Sabres hoped he would be as a 4th overall pick in 2019, maybe a fresh start is in order.
Byram is capable of being a reliable producer, scoring 38 points (7 goals, 31 assists) for the Buffalo Sabres in 82 games.
The defenseman is one neglected area on the ice by Steve Yzerman, and should feel the pressure of it on his shoulders already if he hasn't.
The Red Wings' blue line has seen better days, as they've failed to control games in their favor and prevent goals. Despite having
Moritz Seider, and
Simon Edvinsson, they've been a sieve.
Bowen Byram is still young enough: he'd add some upside to a growing core in Detroit, and would be a quick upgrade.
The team ranked 26th in 5-v-5 goal scored percentage, and a whopping 24th in expected goals.
The young defenseman could have an immediate impact on those statistics right away, if GM Steve Yzerman decides the juice is worth the squeeze.
The only question we'd have to consider is how expensive it'd be to pry him from the Red Wings' own Atlantic Division competitors, in Buffalo.
