Now that the Red Wings' season has come to an end, the organization is between a rock and a hard place with several players who are suggested to hit the open market this summer, and net-minder, Alex Lyon, has openly confirmed his fate within Detroit.
The 30-year old net-minder,Alex Lyon, was acquired by the Detroit Red Wings on July 1, 2023, and will be an UFA, also known as Unrestricted Free Agent, this summer, and it is suggested this veteran will be on his way out of Detroit.
However, the goaltender has recently confirmed his departure after reminiscing on the two-year's spent with the organization, expressing his appreciation towards Detroit and how he was able to endure the two most productive years of his NHL career.
«I'm happy,» Lyon stated. «Got to be a full time NHL player for two years.»
It seems as though the net-minder is fully aware of his limited time remaining with the Red Wings.
«Just gonna kind of have to see the way the winds blow and it's a lot of things that are kind of out of my control,» Lyon said. «But it's a great place to play and loved playing at LCA.»
The veteran is in an unfortunate position as he is the only net-minder within Detroit with an expiring contract, both Petr Mrazek and Cam Talbot are under contract for next season.
Alex Lyon admits he knew he was the odd goalie out
Lyon also openly admitted he was a bit taken aback when Detroit's GM, Steve Yzerman, acquired Petr Mrazek during the NHL Trade Deadline, as he knew what that move would conclude to.
«Yeah, it was difficult for a minute,» Lyon said. «But that's part of it and part of being a successful professional and a successful goalie is being able to get through mentally, things like that. And so I've been the third goalie on the roster for my whole career.»
Despite Lyon's position, he reveals he wish he could have offered more to Detroit.
«I wish I could have played better here and gotten us, helped better to get us into the playoffs this year,» he said, «But just have to move forward and just keep grinding.»
Although there is no certainty of where the 30-year old veteran will go, it seems as though Alex Lyon and the Red Wings know he will not stay in Detroit.
