Detroit Red Wings land $30M veteran forward in a trade pitch with the New Jersey Devils
The Detroit Red Wings have landed a $30M veteran forward in a massive trade pitch involving the New Jersey Devils.
Adding another forward before the start of the season could be a strategic move for Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings have some depth in the lineup, but targeting a winger or a center wouldn't hurt.
Renowned for his clutch plays in the playoffs with the Tampa Bay Lightning,
Ondrej Palat's role with the Devils diminished in recent years. He went from a bigger role in Tampa to averaging 13:45 last season.
The 34-year-old forward scored 28 points in 72 games with the Devils. In his career, he tallied 505 points, including 177 goals in 825 games. He has two seasons left on his five-year, $6M AAV deal.
In order to land him, Heavy.com believes Steve Yzerman would need to ship
J.T. Compher and a fourth-round pick to New Jersey.
The 30-year-old center is entering his third year in Detroit and has two seasons left on his $5,100,000 AAV contract.
In 76 games last season, the Buffalo Sabres' 35th overall pick in 2013 scored 32 points, including 11 goals.
Trading Compher for Palat wouldn't be a massive change on the ice, but considering Compher is younger, a center, and has a smaller salary, it's hard to believe Yzerman could make that move.
